Well after purchasing the full range of Minitaire paints I found myself with no actual room to hobby anymore.

Queue the A-Team theme tune, some lengths of 2cm thick pine and some power tools!

The result is

Since then I have been moving on with my Death Guard/ Nurgle themed Chaos Space Marine list for the Independent Characters hobby progress challenge.

http://www.theindependentcharacters.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=76

I'm currently working on the obliterators, taking the Finecast sculpts and getting them less Black Legiony by removing the iconography which will be replaced with greenstuffed nurgle/death guard iconography.
Getting the light right with the iPad using an iPhone was somewhat of a challenge!

More purchases for my Nurgle Speees mehrens! Some obliterators (all three are perfect casts which is nice) and some cadian's to convert into plague zombies. The box of zombies is inbound....ie waiting for Col Gravis to drop them round!

Everything is coming together nicely. Finding myself really energised by the prospect of the new edition dropping! I didn't play a lot in 6th, not through any feelings towards the rule set, only because of time and money with a new born.Dodgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15372180282756291084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4631532053728325658.post-5758886557646216812014-04-19T08:51:00.001+01:002014-04-19T08:51:18.783+01:00Badger Minitaire Paint RangeHaving used their tints before and been very impressed, I've splashed out on full set of Badger Minitaire Paints. Really looking forward to using them on my Nurgle Hobby Progress Challenge army!Dodgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15372180282756291084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4631532053728325658.post-26291844572415919472014-04-09T09:47:00.001+01:002014-04-09T09:47:21.476+01:00Rebuilding Plague MarinesSo the Finecast Plague Marines I got are in a pretty poor state. I am not too worred about the body of them...they are nurgle so a few odd casting areas isn't the end of the world however the bolters were bothering me. The muzzles where in very poor condition, looking almost conical rather than cylindrical with cracks down them. Some even sheared when I went to drill the barrels out.....so the solution.....30 mile round trip to a train store to buy some styrene tubing to rebuild the muzzles.....I think I may have a touch of modelling OCD :/

So what did I do. . .

First off pics of the muzzles. Pretty darn poor.

The idea I have in my dead is that he is on the Terminus Est and in the process of falling to Nurgle. I want his armour looking weather, worn and beaten up.

I have researched a few techniques on salt weathering. A technique long used by scale modellers to weather trains and scale models. I've never used it before and so wanted to test it prior to jumping on a nice forgeworld model.

I've taken a square of plasticard. Made sure it is nice and clean and given it a coat of Vallejo Grey Polyurethane Primer.

After this was allowed plenty of time to dry I then washed the salt off under cold water, gently scrubbing it with a very soft old toothbrush (my 15 month old daughters old baby tooth brush!). This has very soft warn bristles to only brushes off the salt and doesn't excessively damage the paint. I also scored a few lines with a toothpick to get a feel for how scratches would look.

The effect looks good but is rather harsh so needs toning back. To do this I used a filter. Normally a filter is an extremely diluted enamel or oil medium however not having any white enamel or oil paints I improvised with an acrylic white filter made with a couple of drops of Vallejo Air Colour White mixed with a drop of flow aid, a drop of slow-dri and a lot of airbrush thinner.

There is an old adage that paint should be thinned to the consistency of skimmed milk in order to airbrush it. In this case we are talking about what looks like slightly thick water! It really is very diluted so there is maybe one part paint to 15 or 20 parts thinner.

I gave the card a couple of passes with the filter allowing it to dry in between applications

Once that was done I gave the whole piece another go over with the white filter for final effect.

So what did I learn from this.

Well on the scale I am working on, using sea salt is going to leave much to large an area of the under colour. The table salt marks will scale down to Typhon much better. Also I need to pick up some white enamel paint and a white filter to give better results on the edge highlighting and the filters. The enamel paint will have a much longer work time and I can wet feather the edges of the white contrasting highlights to blend into the main base colour. I am going to try and pick up some AK or Mig chipping fluid this weekend from a local hobby store to try those and see how different the effect is. Will post another update when I have tried that.

If you have read this far thanks for sticking with me :) This was very much an experiment but one I am happy with. The test piece has way more salt weathering on it than I would use on Typhon but wanted to make sure the technique was valid....I think it is.

Has taken a fair bit of scraping and cleaning. There are a few places where the resin has bubbles or poured thin that need filling or reinforcing. I need to partially rebuild one of the week where the resin is pretty soft. Still needs a couple of once overs to make sure I haven't missed anything before a nice soak in some washing up liquid.

Fair bit of work required but a start has been made which is the important bit!

Well by started I mean I've bought some models.....OK Model! Picked up Calas Typhon to run as my Typhus. Absolutely gorgeous sculpt! Looks so much better in person than the pics on the forgeworld website and they were pretty darn good to begin with.

I have the usual resin issues of a lot of cleaning needing doing and some greenstuffing of sections where the resin has bubbles or gone paper thin. Also and slightly disappointing is the removable base. Once both parts of the resin base are assembled, there is nowhere near enough room to get the 40mm base out to game with.Something is going to have to be done with magnets I think in order to be able to put him on a separate 40mm base. Will post up some pics later of the cleaned up version.
A very pic heavy update for you. Very much still work in progress. There is a lot of clean up work still to be done. At this stage the airbrush work has been done. I am now on the metallics and very much missing GW Boltgun Metal! The VMC equivalent just doesn't flow as well or have the coverage that BGM did......ahh memories...

Couple of pics of the Storm Raven. The weathering is starting to take shape nicely and the base is going top have more water effect added each day for the next 4 or 5 days or so to build up the pool effect.

Wanted it to fit the rest of the army so making the base up to look like the Dreadnaught base.

Since this photo the base has been given a pigment wash to mute the rather bright tones in the rock layers. I will then use the vallejo pastes to bring some different textures and seal the recess visible in the picture which will become a small pond of dirty water.Dodgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15372180282756291084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4631532053728325658.post-65828831296018033702013-04-18T23:30:00.003+01:002013-04-18T23:30:59.016+01:00The Rest of my Blood Angels - Monster Pic Heavy Post!So my Blood Angels are just about done. There are a few minor things here and there that need doing but they are minutes worth of work rather than hours or days ....or months............or years!

They have been a real labour of love but after 2ish years and several versions of red later I am really happy with how they have turned out.

So here they are......
The scale of it is immense. A real pleasure to work on a rare piece like this, you don't see scratch build/kit bashes of this quality very often.

So the clients request was essentially to get the main block colours down so they can work on the detail. The airbrush makes this a relatively simple job although getting smooth even coverage over a large flat surface does take some time to learn.

So it was as close as I could get to Codex Grey for the main colour with Gun Metal Grey for the metallics. I used Vallejo Game Colour Cold Grey (very well thinned down) and Vallejo Air Colour Gun, highlighted with Vallejo Air Colour Steel. The Cold Grey was laid down from from an angle so as to leave some shadows in the recess, particularly around the statues and windows on the superstructure.

[slight aside]

I have had gone through a couple of pots of the VAC Gun and Steel since I bought my airbrush. I have to say that unlike the rest of the Vallejo Air Colour range. Their metallics are quite fussy about going through my Iwata HP-C. I have to thin them down considerably. Anyone else experience this?

[/slight aside]

So that was all the client needed. However.....

As usual I couldn't help myself and had to do just a little bit more. It seemed a shame to have such a nice huge bore gun sat there with no kind of weathering on it....so I have airbrushed a blended up layer of sepia wash (made using Les' from Awesome Paint Job's mix) and then an extreme airbrushed edge of some GW Leviathan (ironically enough) Purple wash. This gives that really nice scorched patina you get from repeated application of heat around a barrel. I finished off the very edge with Tamiya Weathering Master series compacts Soot, Gun Metal and Silver. These really are a superb series of products and I would strongly recommend you pick these up if you are into your weathering.

Now taking pictures of this beast was a little tricky. It was somewhat bigger than my light tent will allow for so these are just taken on the table. Hope you enjoy.

Two years of work and MANY revisions of the paint scheme later and I am really happy with them. Proper pics will come soon just as soon as I get a day with some decent sunlight....not sure if you are all familiar with the average Devon spring time....this might take a while!

In the mean time a friend of mine Col Gravis has asked me to do some work for him on his Leviathan. He has been scratch building this for......well as long as I have known him now :) and has a campaign weekend coming up that he would like it ready for but doesn't have the time to do himself as he is currently redoing his really rather pretty Praetorian Imperial Guard army, saw a sneak preview last night and they are looking superb.

So over to the airbrush it will be to get the main colour down for him.

Here are a few quick photos taken this morning to give you an idea of the scale of this tank. My Land Raider is dwarved by it!!
Satin varnish then oil washes went on last night. The effect brings out the parchment and skulls very nicely. I will probably go back and apply a light bleached bone glaze to the highlights on the skulls to make them pop. The wings where also given a very well thinned blue wash as well. The desired effect is to have the wash so thin that capillary action does the work in adding more shade into the recesses. Works nicely on top of the painted blending.

Anyway, wanted to get the most out of the box sets I have magnetised the backpacks and the jump packs so they can be used in either configuration. I love the fluff behind death company and the models look fantastic, the detail level is brilliant.

So we have the squad work in progress pic

And a couple of pics of the magnets.

The magnets are usual miniature modelling rare earth magnets. I bought mine a few years ago from http://e-magnetsuk.com/ The service from them was excellent, I have ordered several sets from them and they always arrived the next day. What is nice is that I am seeing them more frequently in local hobby stores now so the availability certainly in my area at least is more main stream these days. The processing of fitting the magnets was rather fiddly.

For the position on the figure body I cut off the nub that would usually glue into the backpack or jump pack and then very carefully drilled a 1mm pilot hole using a pin vice in the middle of where that nub used to be. I actually used a seam scraping tool as a reamer to position where I wanted the pilot hole. I then drilled using a 3mm bit (size of the magnet) and set the magnet using superglue making sure all the polarities where the same.

The magnets I used actually fitted perfectly inside the backpack as though they had been designed to go there. The jumppack required more work however. The entire recess that would usually house the plastic nub was filled with Vallejo model putty and allowed to cure thoroughly. This had to be repeated in a few stages adding a bit more putty each time to allow a proper cure. I then repeated the process used on the main body by drilling a pilot hole then a 3mm hole before gluing the magnets in place making sure the polarities corresponded to the main body. It was a fiddly process but worth doing to get the versatility of having both options.

The squad should be finished in the next couple of days so stay tuned for some finished pics.

Both have suggested the weathering could use a bit of splatter. The truth is I have not tried that technique and am reluctant to try it on a model that I have finished to this standard. I think I will rig up a piece of plasticard with the colour scheme I have used and try it first.
It will be interchangeable between all configurations, GodHammer, Crusader and Redeemer. Shown below is the GodHammer pattern. Bits I have realised I have forgotten to finish include washing and highlighting the multi-melta and the lens on top of the sponsons. That is a 5 minute job for tomorrow. In the mean time here are a couple of pics. I shall change the options over and take some shots of the Redeemer and Crusader on Friday. Valentines Day tomorrow!
Filled in the Adeptus Mechanicus symbol on the engine last night as well as gun shrouds ( I am planning on this Land Raider being convertible for all variants so can run Godhammer lascannons, Hurricane bolters or Flamestorm cannons.)

Couple of pics. First the Adeptus Mechanicus symbol. A little rough and ready, only the main colours are down due to the lateness of the hour painting last night. The blending on the skull needs revisting and it needs a wash as well to pull it all together and add shade to the metallic left half of the skull.
I do have a pic of the gun shroud but it is really blurry. The joys of taking photos with an iPhone camera in way less than perfect light. I will leave that one until it is assembled I think.Dodgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15372180282756291084noreply@blogger.com0
